What is Periodontal Disease and How Can I Avoid It?

Periodontal disease (also known as gum disease) is caused by plaque that has built up along the gums. Eventually, the plaque hardens into tarter, which can lead to an infection that may eventually break down the gum tissue and spread to the underlying bone. This can result in loosened or lost teeth. Additionally, bacteria can enter the bloodstream through the gums and result in additional health issues. It is very important for everyone to schedule regular checkups, but even more so for individuals with a history of gum disease. Always remember that early detection is your best defense. If gum disease is detected early on, it may be easily remedied thorough professional cleaning and a more dedicated oral hygiene routine. However, gum disease in its later stages may require you to be referred to a periodontist.
