Tooth Desensitization

Although it may seem like a minor issue, tooth sensitivity can mean making significant changes to your diet to avoid foods and beverages that cause you discomfort. Sensitivity is so common that many people it is just something they just need to live with. In fact, we can solve your sensitivity problem with tooth desensitization in a single appointment.

Determining the Cause

First, we will determine what is causing sensitivity. Knowing the cause will allow us to bring you the most appropriate treatment.

The reason could be your oral hygiene routine. We will check that you are using the right brushing technique and an appropriate toothbrush. If you are using whitening products at home, these may also be inducing sensitivity.

Another possible culprit is gum disease. Gingivitis causes gum recession, leading the roots to be exposed. Alternatively, it may also be because of a buildup of plaque. In either of these case, we will likely recommend a cleaning and scaling in addition to tooth desensitization treatment.

A few other causes include eating too many acidic foods, damaged teeth, and recent dental work (sensitivity will only be temporary).

Treatment Options

We apply a special gel to your teeth to desensitize them. This strengthens enamel and stops nerve transmissions that cause discomfort. The procedure only takes a few minutes.

In addition to this treatment, we may recommend ways to prevent sensitivity at home. This will allow the treatment to last into the long term. Possible solutions include toothpaste for sensitive teeth, avoiding certain foods, and using a fluoride mouthwash.

Finally, we will address the underlying issue causing sensitivity. For instance, if teeth are damaged due to night grinding, we will create you a mouthguard to wear while you sleep. If you have tooth decay, you will receive a filling.
