What Does Soda Do to Your Teeth?

What does soda do to your teeth? Oshawa dentists will tell you soda will cause tooth decay.

How soda damages your teeth

Sugar from soda will lie between your teeth at the gum line and allow bacteria to breed leading to decay.

On top of that soda contains both Phosphoric and Citric acids which can severely damage your teeth by thinning your enamel which will lead to decay.

In severe cases, this can lead to teeth loss.

Ways to reduce the risk of cavities

  • Reduce the amount or stop drinking soda.
  • Anytime you have a sugary drink; soda, juices, even some of the energy drinks, rinse several times with water or a good mouth rinse.
  • Do not brush immediately after drinking soda.
  • Use a straw; it keeps the sugar and acids away from your teeth.
  • Brush and floss daily.
  • Make sure to use a toothpaste and rinse that has fluoride in it.
  • See your dentist twice a year for checkups and cleanings.
  • Drinking it quickly allows less time for bacteria from the sugar and acids to accumulate around the teeth which leads to decay.
  • Do not drink soda before bed and NEVER ever put soda in a baby bottle for a toddler.
  • Choose sodas or drinks with less sugar such as diet sodas if you need to drink soda.
  • You will notice once you quit drinking sugary drinks you will have fewer cravings for junk food.
  • Eat a healthy diet that is balanced and drink plenty of water your cravings for soda and/or junk food will diminish altogether.
