Caps are cosmetic crowns used to restore teeth with minor damage. They are made from porcelain in the same colour as your natural teeth, allowing them to pass unnoticed, even when on front teeth. A cap can fit on just one tooth or across a number of teeth, instantly improving appearances and enhancing your smile.
Uses of Caps
A cap may be the right option for you if your teeth are cracked, decayed, or stained. For instance, caps are ideal for cavities that are too large for fillings, for protecting a weakened tooth, and for masking misshapen or discoloured teeth.
You will need to visit our clinic twice to receive a cap. At your first appointment, we will examine the tooth and determine your eligibility for a cap. You may need an X-ray to check the roots of the tooth and bone beneath to ensure that there is no damage under the surface.
If we decide that a tooth is suitable for a cap, we will give you a local anesthetic to numb the area before filing down the tooth. This is necessary to create space for the cap. We will then make an impression of your tooth. We send this to a dental laboratory along with specifications as to the colour of the material for the cap.
You will return to our clinic once your cap is ready. We will place it on your tooth to check fit and colour before cementing it in place. Again, you will receive a local anesthetic.
Caring for Your Cap
At your second appointment, we will give you recommendations on how to care for your cap to maximize its lifespan. With good oral hygiene practices, your cap can last up to 15 years.
