Overbrite surgery Oshawa - Oshawa Dentist - Harmony Dental Care

When is Overbite Surgery Necessary?

In a correct bite, the upper teeth overlap the lower teeth just slightly. If your upper teeth extend far beyond the lower teeth, you have an overbite. When overbite is detected early, children can often receive braces to treat the condition. After the jaw is fully developed, overbite surgery Oshawa may be necessary.

Why Does an Overbite Need Correcting?

Usually, an overbite has little impact on appearances, but it can lead to dental problems. These include pain in the jaw, loose teeth, sensitivity, headaches, and worn-down teeth. It severe cases, an overbite can even impact speech, chewing, and swallowing.

What Does Surgery Involve?

Before surgery, you will likely need to wear braces for between 9 and 18 months. This will work on the alignment of your teeth.

For the overbite surgery, you will receive a general anesthetic. This means you will be asleep throughout the procedure. Your dentist will pull back your cheeks to reach your jaw. He or she will make cuts in your upper lips and at the base of your mouth. Then, your dentist will move the jaw into place, either as a single piece or after cutting it into segments. Finally, the dentist will use screws and plates to hold your jaw in the correct position.

What to Expect After Surgery

You will likely experience some discomfort after surgery. Your dentist can prescribe you pain medication to help with your recovery. You will be able to resume normal activities after about two weeks, although your jaw may still feel uncomfortable for up to six weeks.

After surgery, you will need to visit your dentist three times. As soon as your bones are healed, your dentist will fit you with braces to realign your teeth.
